English word stress can be troublesome to second language (L2) learners but proper placement of word stress is important. Setting out what word stress means and explaining why word stress placement in English can be troublesome to L2 learners and why proper stress placement is important, this paper explores the findings of research studies on three factors – syllabic structure; distributional stress patterns of lexical class (nouns and verbs); and analogical extension of the stress patterns of phonologically similar known words – which influence English word stress placement, and attempts three applications of the research findings for pronunciation teaching to L2 learners.
