Sentence types & discourse functions; Coordination

 

Guidance will be given to enable you to (a) clearly see the linguistic structures of the following expressions; and (b) readily produce expressions with such structures.
To ensure your success, adequate examples will be further provided with clear explanation.

 

Sentence types and discourse functions

    • Aren’t you joining us this evening?

    • Revealing details of discussion would breach the confidentiality rule of the Executive Council (ExCo). Suffice to say that ExCo’s decision was taken having regard to Hong Kong's overall interests.

Coordination

    • They were neither able nor willing to provide the capital.
    • I am prepared to meet them when and where they like.
    • He came not to help but to hinder us.
    • The country can and must recover from its present crisis.
    • He has not met either her mother or her father.
    • You must take the course and pass the exam.
    • He is a businessman well-known both in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
    • The enemy attacked quickly and with great force.
    • I’ll try and come tomorrow.  
    • They must have liked the apartment, otherwise they wouldn’t have stayed so long.
    • Most people have read the book or seen the film.
    • Good cooking can disguise, but cannot improve, the quality of the ingredients.
